Staying Warm in the Cold

Cold water teaches resilience, but it also asks for respect. Once you move past summer, the temperature shift can catch you off guard. The right gear helps you stay safe and keep showing up when the air bites and the water feels icy.

Thermal Swim Cap

The mornings get cold quick as Winter approaches. Sometimes the stillest, most beautiful ones are also the coldest. A thermal swim cap takes that edge off and keeps your ears warm, the wind out, and makes the whole thing more enjoyable. The Orca Thermal Neoprene Swim Cap fits well, doesn’t dig in, and it’s dry again by the next morning, ready to go.

Booties

I didn’t realise how important these were until I got chillblains in my toes. Once I added booties, the problem disappeared. They’re essential if you’re dipping through winter or staying in for longer sessions. Orca’s booties come in two versions - standard and extra warm. I used the extra warm pair while healing my toes, but I’ll likely move to the standard version next winter for prevention.

Gloves

I don’t personally use gloves, but they can make a big difference if your hands are sensitive to cold or you have Raynaud’s. They come in men's and women's options.

A Few Simple Notes

  • Dress warmly before and after your dip - especially your feet and hands.

  • Keep a towel and warm clothes ready for when you get out.

  • Move gently afterwards to bring your body heat back up.

  • I usually have a hot water bottle waiting for me in the car. It helps bring the warmth back gradually on the drive home.

It’s not about proving toughness. It’s about teaching your body to handle the cold and burn steady from the inside out. The right gear just makes it a nicer experience.
