Clove Oil Mould Cleaner

Mould is one of those quiet stressors that affects more than your walls. It affects your breath, your sinuses, even your energy. The smell alone can keep your nervous system braced. But you don’t need harsh chemicals to tackle it.

Clove oil is powerful. It contains eugenol, a natural compound that kills mould spores at the root and helps prevent regrowth. I’ve found it far more effective than bleach. Where bleach made the mould disappear only for it to return weeks later, clove oil kept it gone for months.

The Simple Recipe

[DoTerra Clove Essential Oil – Shop Link]

Add 4 drops of clove oil and 1 tablespoon of bicarb soda to ½ cup of white vinegar. Mix gently and pour into a glass spray bottle.

To use:

  • Spray directly on mould patches.

  • Leave for about 10 - 20 minutes.

  • Scrub with a toothbrush or cloth.

  • Wipe clean and allow to dry completely.

If you prefer a quicker option, clove oil and vinegar alone also work well. The bicarb simply adds a gentle abrasive lift for thicker growth.

There are many essential oil brands, but DoTerra is my personal favourite since it is high quality, potent, and widely available online (eBay). It’s one of those staples I always keep in the cupboard.

A Few Notes

  • Be careful | clove oil is extremely strong. Always dilute, and avoid spilling on surfaces - it can strip varnish or paint.

  • Don’t use on porous fabrics | or delicate materials.

  • Address the cause | this cleaner kills mould, but if the space stays damp, it will return. Use good airflow or a dehumidifier to keep moisture low.

  • Storage | keep the spray bottle sealed, out of sunlight, and remake every few weeks for freshness.
